Advantages of translating with a Translation memory

Translation memory (TM) is a database for reusable translation segments (primarily (partial) sentences). When working in a CAT tool, new segments, which always consist of a source-language string and the corresponding target-language string, are saved in the TM. For each new project, the CAT tool compares the new, segmented source text with the existing entries in the TM and provides suggestions for identical or similar segments that can be adapted or directly reused.

Benefits and advantages in practice:

  • Consistency: standardized terminology and recurring formulations across projects.

  • Efficiency: faster work thanks to reuse of existing translations.

  • Quality assurance: proven segment decisions remain documented.

  • Cost savings: reduced translation effort for repetitive content.

A well maintained TM thus acts as a strategic knowledge resource for language services, translation agencies and freelancers and supports consistent, efficient translations across projects.

T5Memory

T5Memory is the specialized TM service of translate5, available as a REST API and provides Translation memory data via network calls.

Saving of segments at the end of a project

Segments with the following processing status are not saved in the main TM when a project is completed:

  • “locked” or “blocked”: These segments are ignored when saving to the main TM at the end of the project.
  • “draft”: If there are still segments with this status at the end of a project, the project cannot be finished.

Project managers can arrange for segments with the processing status ”draft” to be saved to the main TM if they save the segments to the linked main TMs in the language resource overview.
